This was a book redesign I did as a final project in college. We were challenged to take a chapter from an existing book and re-imagine it. I chose this book at a used bookstore, because I enjoyed the topic and thought it would make for an interesting subject matter. Because it was a book I found in the wild I had to hand type the chapter. All photographs were taken and edited by me (objects belonging to the collections of the Asian Art Museum and California Academy of the Sciences). I tried to make this version of the book more modern, and added a lot more visuals because the original print did not include many. I also enjoyed playing with the grid system here, finding creative ways to make large amounts of information legible but still interesting to look at. As a part of the project, the book was printed and hand-binded as well, and it was very rewarding to hand bind my first hard cover book. It definitely cemented publication design as an area of interest for me.
